Strategic public interest litigation raised over closure of Aberdeen libraries and swimming pool

A petition for a judicial review of the decisions to close six Aberdeen libraries and a swimming pool has been lodged at the Court of Session on Wednesday, 10 May 2023. The respondents are Aberdeen City Council and Sport Aberdeen. The petitioner is a local resident affected by the pool and library closures in Aberdeen.

Local residents from the Save Aberdeen Libraries and Save Bucksburn Swimming Pool campaigns had met with lawyers from Govan Law Centre (GLC) and Grampian Community Law Centre (GCLC).

GLC’s Mike Dailly, Solicitor Advocate has been instructed to act, with assistance from GCLC’s Hannah Moneagle and GLC’s Charis Brooks.

Aberdeen City Council announced the closure of six libraries on 1 March 2023 following the passing of the administration’s budget; while Sport Aberdeen met on 1 March 2023 and agreed the closure of Bucksburn Swimming Pool.

Further petitions for Ferryhill, Cults, Cornhill, Kaimhill and Northfield libraries are expected to be lodged next week.
