GLC’s Education Law Unit is looking for a solicitor to assist in the delivery of the ELU project objectives.  The post is full-time (job-share will be considered).

This position would be suitable for a solicitor with experience in court and tribunal work. We are looking for someone who wishes to join a progressive community law centre to assist in the delivery and expansion of this Scotland wide project.

The post is based in Orkney Street, Govan but some travel within Scotland will be required.

Job description

The solicitor will be responsible for assisting the law centre to deliver the objectives and targets of the Education Law Unit.  The solicitor will be required to provide advice and support for pupils and/or their parents.  The main focus of the work is in the twin areas of additional support needs and discrimination within education. 

This support will take the form of giving advice or information over the telephone, by e-mail or in person.  It will also involve providing legal representation for pupils or parents at tribunals or court.  The successful candidate would also be expected to deliver training in fulfilment of ELU targets and aims.

Person specification

Essential:  A degree in Scots law; a diploma in legal practice; good communication and presentation skills; full Law Society of Scotland practising certificate; good research and analytical skills; ability to work well under supervision and to meet deadlines; an interest in and commitment to children’s rights.

Desirable:  Knowledge and experience of issues relating to pupils facing discrimination; experience of working with children and young people.
