Govanhill Law Centre and the MILK Community have launched a new project for people in Glasgow’s Govanhill to access legal advice and representation on a range of housing, homelessness and tenancy rights issues.
The drop-in project operates every Thursday from 1pm to 3pm at MILK Community, 378 Cathcart Road, Glasgow, G42 7DF.
No appointment needed. Local members of the Govanhill community in need of housing advice, support or legal representation in housing cases are welcome to drop in between 1pm and 3pm on Thursdays.
Evie Rose Smith, Community Manager at MILK said: “The housing crisis is affecting so many people in Glasgow and the women who come to MILK – who are often seeking asylum and don’t speak English as a first language – are particularly at risk. In the past twelve months I’ve made more homeless referrals for our service users than in all my previous years at MILK combined. Having people with legal expertise advocate on behalf of MILK Community members is invaluable and this clinic is a real asset to us”.
Ailsa Clark, Legal Caseworker at Govanhill Law Centre said: “I’m really pleased to be part of this new legal drop-in launching in Govanhill. There is a clear unmet need for accessible legal advice locally, particularly around housing, where many residents face poor conditions and rogue landlords who can make life a misery for the most vulnerable. Having worked in housing and homelessness for many years, I see how vital early, free legal advice can be. Govan Law Centre is also proud to build on our long-standing partnership with MILK Community, and we hope this service will make a real, practical difference by helping people feel supported, informed and empowered to assert their rights when they are at risk”.
