Stay safe at Christmas – our Women’s Rights Project campaign

Our Women Rights Project at Govan Law Centre (GLC) is busy all year round but we are aware many services that people normally turn to are closed over Christmas and the festivities but we never want anyone to feel left out or alone especially when dealing with domestic violence.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone, regardless of background, education or income. Domestic abuse does not just happen in communities with financial deprivation. However, a lack of finances can make a woman feel stuck if she is concerned where she can live, especially if she has children.

Many domestic abuse relationships can have coercive and financial control over their partner and this can often lead to the women feeling more vulnerable and isolated. We are aware that women experience homelessness differently from men, so instead of rough sleeping they will enter or stay in unsuitable relationships and live with domestic abuse, for fear of rough sleeping or staying in unsuitable hotel accommodation.

Women need to know their legal rights and the remedies they can take if they are not accommodated. GLC’s Senior Solicitor and Head of Prevention of Homelessness Services, Lorna Walker, explained why GLC created our Women’s Rights Project (WRP):

“Our WRP was launched in 2021 to empower women. We understand how vulnerable and trapped women can feel who are living with domestic abuse, we want women to know they are not alone and there are people who they can turn to, who can help and want to help”.

“We believe knowledge is power and if women in these difficult situations have the right information, when the time is right they may be able to take the first steps to getting the help and support they need. We are aware of the extra pressures this time of year can have on people, especially mum’s trying to make everything magical and the increased financial pressure that comes with this”.

“Often over the festivities, there is increased time at home and services are closed, women who’re in a domestic abusive relationship may feel more isolated and alone. We want these women to have the tools to take the first steps when the time is right for them, knowing exactly where they can get the support they deserve and their legal rights”.

How can Women effected by Domestic Abuse or Violence ‘Be Safer’ during Christmas and New Year Holidays?

If it’s safe to do so, women should reach out for help and support if suffering from Domestic Abuse or Violence or are worried that this may escalate during Christmas.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Contact a family member or trusted friend. Talk to them about the help you need, and think about establishing a phrase or code word you can use to let them know you are in danger and need immediate help.
  • Be aware of safe use when using a mobile or laptop to search help for Domestic Abuse. Clear call logs and browsing histories.
  • Keep a note of local helping services, especially those who are open or accessible 24/7 and those who provide emergency help. Know your local authority homeless service details if you need to leave urgently and require shelter.
  • Think about what you would need to pack for yourself and any children in an emergency. Remember essentials; some cash, important documents, medications, suitable clothing for a few days, your phone and charger. Make an exit plan; essentials – location – transport – cost
