Solicitor post GLC’s Education Law Unit
Govan Law Centre’s Education Law Unit is looking for a solicitor to assist in the delivery of the project objectives of Let’s Talk ASN Scotland. This is an opportunity to join a nationally recognised project funded by Scottish Government.
The post is full-time (job-share will be considered).
This position would be suitable for a solicitor with experience in court and tribunal work. We are looking for someone who wishes to join a progressive community law centre to assist in the delivery and expansion of this Scotland wide project.
Subject to Scottish Government covid guidelines, the post is based in Orkney Street, Govan but some travel within Scotland will be required.
The solicitor will be responsible for assisting the law centre to deliver the objectives and targets of the Education Law Unit. The solicitor will be required to provide advice and support for pupils and/or their parents with the main focus of the work in the twin areas of additional support needs and discrimination within education.
This support will take the form of giving advice or information over the telephone, by e-mail or in person. It will also involve providing legal representation for pupils or parents at tribunals or court across Scotland. The successful candidate would also be expected to deliver training in fulfilment of ELU targets and aims.
Essential: A degree in Scots law; a diploma in legal practice; good communication and presentation skills; full Law Society of Scotland practising certificate; good research and analytical skills; ability to work well under supervision and to meet deadlines; an interest in and commitment to children’s rights.
Desirable: Knowledge and experience of issues relating to pupils facing discrimination; experience of working with children and young people.

Trainee solicitor post at GLC’s Education Law Unit
SALARY – as recommended by Law Society of Scotland
START DATE – July/August 2021
Due to the expansion of our Let’s Talk ASN Scotland service, this is an exciting opportunity to join the Education Law Unit at the largest community led law centre in Scotland. The position would be based in our offices in Govan, although some travel may be required throughout Scotland. The successful candidate would work with a dedicated team of solicitors and caseworkers assisting children, young people and their families with Additional Support Needs to assert their legal rights in education.
Although based within our ELU, to provide a well-rounded traineeship, the successful candidate will also spend time with our other projects including housing, employment, social welfare law and discrimination
Latterly, the trainee will be expected to appear at ASN Tribunals and in court.
The successful candidate MUST have:
A degree in Scots Law
Completed the Diploma in Legal Practice
It would be preferable if the candidate could evidence
An interest in education law and supporting those with Additional Support Needs
A commitment to social welfare law
Experience in working with vulnerable client groups.
Experience of working within a team
